The next bit of excitement came after supper. Kirk and I were in the cabin debating with some of the other boys on what evening activity to choose when a scream and a string of words that should not be used in camp drowned out our discussion. I recognized Elijah’s voice.
Kirk and I looked at each other and grinned. We turned and looked out the screen-windows in time to see Elijah running out of Cabin 31, wearing only tighty-whities and flip-flops. He made a dash for the latrine.
“I figured he wouldn’t change his underwear until tomorrow morning,” I said.
Kirk and I burst into laughter. We laughed until our eyes watered, rolling around on my top bunk like maniacs. Mr. Brubaker came out and looked at us as if we’d lost our minds.
We kept watch, and a few minutes later Elijah came back out of the latrine, now wearing only his flip-flops. He was carrying his briefs.
He glared at our cabin just before he went inside his own.
Kirk and I started giggling again. It was just too funny.
A very few minutes later, a fully dressed Elijah came stomping down the hill and up the steps of our cabin. The door flew open, and he stood there glaring at me with his fists clinched.
“I know you did it!” he said. “You will pay, Curtis Lincoln! You will pay!”
With that he turned and left.
“I see you’re making new friends, Curtis,” Mr. Brubaker said.
“I have no idea what he was talking about,” I said, putting on my best innocent look.
“Uh-huh,” said Mr. Brubaker and then walked into his room.
“What did you do?” Jaden asked.
Jaden rarely spoke to me, but his curiosity got the best of him.
“I put Icy Hot in his underwear in retaliation for running my boxer-briefs up the flagpole.”
“Oww!” Jaden said.
Half the boys in the cabin put their hands over their crotches and had pained expressions on their faces. It was the same reaction most guys had when they saw another guy get hit in the ‘nads.
“The best part is it won’t wash off. It will burn for hours,” I said.
“You are pure evil,” Jaden said. Oddly enough, there was a touch of admiration in his voice.
Mr. Brubaker came out of his room and walked over to me.
“Hand it over,” he said.
I played dumb and innocent. It didn’t work.
“Now, Curtis.”
I sighed, climbed down off my bunk and retrieved the jar of Icy Hot I had hidden in my center bin. I’d forgotten Mr. Brubaker could hear everything we said from his room. I was busted.
“Outside,” he said.
Kirk gave me a look of pity as our counselor led me outside.
Mr. Brubaker stood and faced me. His muscles were intimidating.
“Don’t do it again,” he said.
I nodded.
“Putting Icy Hot in someone’s underwear could be dangerous.”
“I didn’t mean to hurt him…much.”
“Practical jokes aren’t funny if someone gets hurt. I know you understand that.”
He was referring to the note on the flagpole this morning. Elijah had no idea how much his joke had hurt me. I nodded again.
